Would anybody like to be a contributor ?

Hey everybody,

Is anybody who reads this blog interested in being a contributor to it ?

Might as well put the offer out there. Perhaps someone else will be.

It’s Friday and I am bored so …

New idea, seeking feedback

November 28th, 2008

I was talking to someone who enjoys the show and we were thinking about trying something new. Basically a discussion between the two of us (In an ancient Greek Dialogue style) that we then record and release as episodes. What do people think ? Would you like to contribute something like that to the show yourself ? Either with me, or with someone else ?

The plan was to do the first one in parallel with the regular episodes rather than as a replacement for them to see how it goes.

Thanks to The Rebels of Mars blog for this wonderful illustration. Maybe I can learn to write fantasy after all ? Original can be found here

Feed Confusion ?

November 27th, 2008

Hi all,

One user commented that there was some confusion about the RSS feed to use for Sci Phi Journal.

I have modified the original feed to only do the media posts and leave out everything else. I’ll provide an “everything and the kitchen sink” feed later.

Questions for Reflection

  1. Is the idea of fate relevant to the modern world ?
  2. Oracles has passed into History, but Fortune Teller, Psychics and others are still around. What is this fascination we have with knowing the future ?
  3. If you know the future can you avoid your fate ?

Depression and Substance Dualism

November 26th, 2008

I’ve been thinking about writing an article on Substance Dualism and my Depression, based on my first hand experience and musing on the topic. What do people think of that idea ? Anybody interested in helping write it ? Or have any thoughts on things worth addressing ?

Tom Lehrer’s The Elements as a Flash Animation

November 26th, 2008

I thought i’d share a fun rendition of Tom Lehrer’s The Elements song as a flash animation. So enjoy, it is short and fun. Then again, what would expect from a genius like Tom Lehrer ?

What are the proper limits of government ?

November 26th, 2008

I was thinking about this question the other day in light of the new president elect in the united states and I thought it might make an interesting topic of discussion in the forums if anybody felt to inclined. The question has also come up in a couple of email correspondences with people recently.

So what do you think are the governments proper limits ? Is there any area of life that the government should not intrude into ? What does it mean for the government to get involved in something ?

As many of you can probably already guess I am inclined towards a position of the governments only proper role being in defense and law enforcement, with strong property rights etc, and maybe in the providing of some essential infrastructure like roads and the like.

Another question related to that, is what is an appropriate means for the government raising funds to do these works ? Again, as you can guess I am inclined to think Income Taxes are a bad idea, and that governments ideally should be limited to consumption oriented taxes only.

What do others think ? Comments on this post are disabled, but there is a link over to a forum post for the topic.

I’ve started to post the sci phi show archives, and i’ll work through them as time permits. You can find them here. I might see about collating some of them and putting them up on podiobooks or something. Maybe the Outcasts ?
